Our First Recommendation: James by Percival Everett

A Fresh Perspective on a Classic Tale

James is a masterfully written novel by Percival Everett, one that takes its inspiration from Mark Twain’s classic novels Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. But don’t be mistaken—this isn’t just a retelling of the old stories. Everett does something extraordinary by giving voice to Jim, the enslaved Black man who, in Twain’s originals, was often relegated to the background or used as a prop for Tom and Huck.

In James, Everett reimagines Jim as the protagonist, bringing his perspective to the forefront and in doing so, turns Twain’s stories on their head. This shift in narrative focus offers readers a profound and often uncomfortable reflection on the themes of race, identity, and freedom in American. While Twain’s work is celebrated for its critique of society, Everett digs deeper, exposing the invisibility of Jim in the original novels and reintroducing him as a real, complex, and fully realized character.

A Book That Demands Your Attention

One of the things I loved most about James is that Everett doesn’t insult his readers by simplifying the narrative or dumbing down James’s complexities. This is a smart book—one that challenges you to think critically about slavery and the broader implications of storytelling from different perspectives. Prior to reading James, I took time to revisit Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.  Everett’s reinterpretation profoundly altered my perception of Twain’s work.

Everett’s writing is powerful and poignant, and he succeeds in making Jim—now James—a character who not only stands up to the injustices he faces but also claims his own narrative. The transformation of Jim into James is both symbolic and literal, as he becomes a man who can address his grievances and free himself from the shackles of slavery, both physical and psychological.

More Than Just Satire

While some in the media have labeled James as satire, I didn’t find it satirical in the traditional sense. Satire often evokes humor, but for me, James was anything but funny. Instead, it felt like a necessary and serious revision of a classic narrative, one that strips away the veneer of Twain’s humor to reveal the harsh realities of Jim’s life. Everett does not shy away from the realities of slavery for women, either. It’s a powerful, eye-opening read that left me cheering for James as he finds his voice and his freedom.

A Must-Read for Every Eclectic Reader

If you’re looking for a book that is as challenging as it is rewarding, James is a must-read. It’s a novel that deserves to be on the shelf right next to Twain’s works, not only as a companion piece but as a standalone story that adds depth and humanity to a character who has too long been overlooked.

I’m eager to hear your thoughts on this remarkable book. Did it change how you view Twain’s original stories?
